How to Experience a Destination Like an Insider

Have you ever come home from a trip and realized you spent more time in gift shops than in actual conversations with locals? It happens to even the most seasoned travelers. You go somewhere incredible, tick off the “must-sees,” eat at the places everyone talks about, and then wonder why it didn’t feel as magical as you’d imagined.

The truth is, a destination reveals its best side to the curious traveler who’s willing to wander a little off script. That doesn’t mean skipping the icons entirely. It means pairing them with experiences that are personal, unexpected, and deeply connected to the place.

One of my favorite ways to do this is to avoid the “tourist menu.” Step into a café where the specials are written in chalk and only in the local language. You might not know exactly what you’re ordering, but that’s half the fun. The same goes for timing your visits to when locals live their lives. Tuesday morning markets, late afternoon aperitivo hours, and neighborhood festivals are where you’ll see the real rhythm of a city.

When in doubt, ask better questions. Instead of “Where should I go?” try “Where would you take your best friend?” You’ll get answers that never make it into guidebooks. Small venues also hold big magic. A hidden wine bar with eight seats or a family-run boutique hotel can offer more connection than the biggest, most luxurious resort.

And finally, consider seeing a place through a local’s lens. A well-connected guide can introduce you to artisans, neighborhood legends, and culinary gems you’d never find on your own.

You don’t need to blend in perfectly to experience a place like an insider. You just need the right doors opened for you, and that’s exactly what I do for my clients. I handle the research, the connections, and the behind-the-scenes details so you can step into your destination feeling like you already belong there.
